Real Madrid Club de Fútbol, commonly known as Real Madrid, is a professional football club based in Madrid, Spain. The club was founded on March 6, 1902, by a group of students from the Institución Libre de Enseñanza, led by Juan Padrós.

Real Madrid started out as a small team, playing friendly matches against other local teams. However, in 1905, they joined the newly formed Madrid Football Federation and began playing in official competitions. Real Madrid won their first regional title in 1907, and in 1908, they became the first Madrid-based team to win the Copa del Rey, Spain's national cup competition.

During the 1920s and 1930s, Real Madrid continued to compete in the Copa del Rey, winning the competition four times between 1908 and 1936. However, the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 disrupted football in Spain, and Real Madrid, like many other teams, was forced to suspend its activities.

After the end of the Civil War, Real Madrid resumed play and quickly established itself as one of the top teams in Spain. In the 1950s, the club experienced its first golden era, winning five consecutive European Cups between 1956 and 1960, a feat that has never been matched by any other club.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Real Madrid continued to dominate Spanish football, winning numerous league titles and Copa del Rey trophies. In 1980, the club won its second European Cup, and in 1985, they won their first UEFA Cup, which would later be renamed the Europa League.

The 1990s saw Real Madrid struggle to maintain its dominance, but the arrival of French coach Zinedine Zidane in 2001 ushered in a new era of success for the club. Under Zidane's leadership, Real Madrid won three consecutive Champions League titles between 2016 and 2018, becoming the first team to win the competition in its current format in back-to-back seasons.

Today, Real Madrid is one of the most successful football clubs in the world, with a record 13 European Cup/UEFA Champions League titles, 34 La Liga titles, and numerous other domestic and international trophies to its name. The club's iconic white kit and the famous Santiago Bernabéu stadium have become symbols of football excellence and are known throughout the world.
